Florida Division of Historical Resources Announces Meeting of the Miami Circle Planning Group
Tallahassee, FL --The Miami Circle Planning Group is scheduled to hold its initial meeting Monday, August 13, 2001, for 1 to 3 p.m. at the Sheraton Biscayne Bay Hotel, 495 Brickell Avenue, Miami.
The goals of this meeting are to provide basic research and planning for the site, an overview of site significance, a discussion of site protection, and plans for temporary interpretation and access to the Miami Circle. The Planning Group will utilize the information generated by scientific research and current experiences with protection of the site, thus taking the first step toward developing a management plan.
The 2.2 acre Miami Circle site at Brickell Point was purchased by Florida's Preservation 2000 land acquisition program in November 1999. Contributions to the purchase price of $26.7 million came from the State of Florida, Miami-Dade County with help from the Trust for Public Land, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Metropolitan Planning Organization and private citizens. Interim management of Brickell Point and the Miami Circle is proceeding cooperatively through Miami-Dade County and the Florida Division of Historical Resources.
The eighteen-member planning group was appointed by Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris in February 2001, and is made up of community, ethnic, and government leaders. The members of the group have diverse backgrounds, but share a strong commitment to historic preservation.
Members of the public are invited to attend and submit written suggestions and comments. A public forum will be held at a later date. Future meetings will address funding sources, links to other public recreation plans, and plans for future use of the property.
